Using the AutoFormat feature in Microsoft Word, you can create both an Em dash () and En dash () automatically by typing hyphens. Alternatively, you can insert these special characters using the Insert Symbol menu. You can also copy and paste the dashes from another document, such as a web page, into your Word document.

Microsoft Word can create a table of contents that can be instantly updated to reflect additions and changes in your document. This table of contents acts as both a guide and navigation tool that enables readers to quickly find the information they need. The easiest way to build and maintain a table of contents is by using Styles. 2020-4-4  Word 2016’s heading styles are numbered Heading 1, Heading 2, on down to Heading 9. You use them to identify different parts of a document, but they also take advantage of other Word features. You’re not stuck with using Word’s preset heading styles; you can create your own. For example, text formatted with a heading.

Select Format Paragraph Line and Page Breaks. To make sure your selected heading type always starts on a new page, select Page break before. You also have other options: Widow/Orphan control - Makes sure that there's never a line of text alone at the beginning or end of a page. 2020-4-2  Style Separators are a useful trick in Word that’s been forgotten even by Microsoft itself! Use style separators to have Table of Contents (TOC) entries that use only part of the heading text or text that doesn’t look like a heading. It gives you a lot more flexibility to choose the document formatting you want and not be forced into Word’s standard formatting.

Insert an Em dash using AutoFormat

If you do the following, AutoFormat will insert an Em dash () as you type.

In a Word document:

  1. Type a word, with no space after it.
  2. Type two hyphens, with no space between or after them.
  3. Type another word.
  4. Type a space.

For example, typing:

Something--Something(space)

Will automatically format the line as:

Something—Something

When you press the spacebar after typing the example text above.

Insert an En dash using AutoFormat

If you do the following, AutoFormat will insert an En dash () as you type.

In a Word document:

  1. Type a word, with a space after it.
  2. Type a single hyphen, with a space after it.
  3. Type another word.
  4. Type a space.

For example, typing:

1993(space)-(space)1995(space)

Automatically format the line to:

1993 – 1995

When you press the spacebar after typing the example text above.

Insert an Em or En dash using shortcut keys

To create an Em dash, use the shortcut key combination Ctrl+Alt+minus.

To create an En dash, use the shortcut key combination Ctrl+minus.

Note

Change name microsoft word track changes mac word. Num Lock must be enabled and you need to use the minus key located on the numeric keypad.

Insert an Em or En dash using the Symbol menu

You can also insert a special dash using the Insert Symbol menu:

  1. In a Microsoft Word document, choose Insert in the Menu bar.
  2. Choose Symbol.
  3. Choose More Symbols.
  4. Click the characters you'd like to insert. The Em dash should be on the second row. To insert multiple characters, click them one at a time.
  5. When you're finished, click Close to close the special characters window.
Note

If the En dash is not offered in your Symbol menu, you can still use another method to insert it.

Insert an Em or En dash using copy and paste

If all else fails, copy and paste the dash from another document, such as this page.

  1. Highlight the dash you want to insert:

Em dash:
En dash:

  1. Copy it. (Press Ctrl-C, or -C on a Mac)
  2. In your Word document, place the text cursor where you'd like the dash to go, and paste it. (Press Ctrl-V, or -V on a Mac)

Remove an Em or En dash

If your Word document has an Em dash or En dash and you want to remove it, do one of the following.

  • Highlight the Em dash or En dash using your mouse, then press the Delete key.
  • Place the text cursor after the Em dash or En dash, then press the Backspace key.

If you want to replace the Em dash or En dash with a normal hyphen, type the hyphen after removing the Em or En dash.

If you want page numbers that show the chapter number and the page number, such as 1-1 or 1:1, you can use the a heading style and the Page Number Format dialog box.

If you want a header or footer that looks like this:

you can use sections and field codes.

Let’s take a look at each option.

Use chapter numbers with page numbers

First, apply a heading style, such as Heading 1, to each chapter heading in your document (use this style only for your chapter headings).

On the Home tab, in the Paragraph group, click the Multilevel List button, and then click the option that includes Chapter.

Then, insert a page number.

On the Header and Footer Tools Design tab, in the Header & Footer group, click Page Number, and then click Format Page Numbers.

Select the Include chapter number check box.

In the Chapter starts with style list, click the name of the style that you applied to your chapter headings.

Choose a different separator, if you want, and then click OK.

Use Chapter n and the page number in the header or footer

First, insert a section break before each chapter.

In the header or footer, type Chapter and a space.

On the Insert tab, in the Text group, click Quick Parts, and then click Field.

In the list of fields, click Section, and then click OK.

Press the TAB key to move the cursor to where you want to put the page number.

Now, you’re going to insert the Page field. On the Insert tab, in the Text group, click Quick Parts, click Field, click Page in the list of fields, and then click OK.

Remember that if you’re going to print this out as a booklet, you’ll probably want to use different odd and even pages, which means adding this information one time for the odd page header or footer and then again on an even page for the even page header or footer.
